Netflix is expanding the Stranger Things universe with a brand new animated spin-off series set in the world of the popular show. The streaming giant has confirmed that the Duffer Brothers, executive producers for the original series, will be involved as executive producers on behalf of Upside Down Pictures, alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps.
The as-yet-untitled animated series will be a separate story that connects to the Stranger Things world. The Duffer Brothers have expressed their excitement at seeing their childhood dream of an animated Stranger Things realized. In a statement, they said:
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling."
The announcement of the new spin-off series was made alongside the renewal of season 5 last year, and rumors about potential spin-offs, including an Eleven spin-off, have been circulating ever since. According to Matt Duffer, the new series will be "1,000% different" from the original but will still connect to the Stranger Things world.
